Church MUD

A few weeks ago, I posted about [tag]Church FUD[/tag] – Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. I was asked by a reader what to do when you are past FUD and into MUD – Major Uncertainty and Doubt. What happens when you aren’t treading water, but slogging through mud? It may be because you lost some key staff members or [tag]volunteers[/tag]. Maybe your new chairs are a different color and have caused the less faithful to leave. Whatever it may be, it can be tough to deal with. Here is what can help get past the MUD:

  1. Focus on the Lord – this is the time when our character grows, so be sure to pray and lift up every challenge that comes along. This may sound basic, but often this is the thing we need to weather the storm.
  2. Focus on the people – when times are tough, people also get us through. Now is the time to start investing in people. Often, you will see new leaders emerge and even new opportunities
  3. Focus on the essentials – this season may be a chance to see what is really important and what was wasteful. Hunker down, focus on what is absolutely necessary to run your church or ministry, and put everything into that. You may have to postpone hosting that yearly conference, installing those new PCs, or buying those new HD cameras – be prepared to be content with these circumstances

Whatever you do, don’t panic, don’t give up, and don’t retreat. Allow God to move you in a new direction, one you would have never expected. He may even grow a new generation of leaders and volunteers that you would have never gained otherwise. And in the process, you may learn a few things as well!
