Church FUD

Do you fear change? Does your church? Do you look for reasons to stave off change? Or, are you getting radical about change when change is necessary?

We all know that change is a certainty, and the only thing more certain than change is the resistance to change by those that want things to remain the same. Sometimes, you can find yourself in a tough position. Maybe you are just treading water while your ministry or [tag]church struggles[/tag] to keep afloat. It could be from lack of money, lack of volunteers, or lack of room in your current building. It really comes down to the following questions:

  1. Are you doing what God wants you to do?
  2. Do you fear making changes and upsetting the status quo even if it is based on God’s direction
  3. Are you getting radical enough about this fear to overcome it?

Sometimes, God challenges us to address our [tag]FUD[/tag]: Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. FUD comes from that [tag]spiritual warfare[/tag] we fight or ignore every day – the warfare that prevents us from making a change, taking a risk, or disrupting the status quo. Jesus tells us to get radical with our sin by taking extra steps to prevent it:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. ” – Matt 5:27-29 NLT

Obviously, Jesus isn’t telling us to pluck out our eyes literally, but rather to get serious about the issue at hand, whether it means changing roles within a company, altering our social habits, or picking up and moving away from the temptation by changing jobs.

With our church FUD, we have to do the same thing – get crazy about it! We must be willing to take God’s path of guidance, His direction for how to get there, and then do it! We must be willing to let a ministry alter its course, slow down, or even go away all together. “You mean, no more small groups, men’s ministry, or fancy video productions for a season?” Maybe. Sometimes those times are just what we need to allow Him to show us what really matters, and to get over our FUD.
