The Ongoing Leader: Choosing the Right Medium

Submitted by James Higginbotham on May 25, 2009 – 5:08 amNo Comment

Twitter has been a popular topic in the media the last few months. It allows anyone to write a thought, up to 140 characters, and let the whole world (or a specific person) know. Text it from your phone. Use the website. Use a Twitter client. There is even a way to snail mail your tweet.

Twitter works because it is simple. It can be used from just about any device or your own computer. It just works.

Of course, Twitter works best when you are trying to give back to others. Telling someone you are going to mow the lawn doesn’t help anyone, other than to share in your pain (or joy). It does help people if you tell them what kind of mower works best for you, or tricks for saving time while doing lawn care.

We all have a choice on how to communicate with others: Twitter, blogs, email, phone, text, and face-to-face. Everyone is different and every situation is different. As a leader, you must make sure that you aren’t depending too much on a single medium for communication. Otherwise, you are leaving out part of your team.

The same goes for how your team solves problems. The way you solved the problem last month may not be the best way to solve a similar problem tomorrow. Choose the right medium when leading your team to success. Make sure it is the best choice for the situation.

Don’t get hung up on just one way of doing things. Otherwise, you may find yourself tweeting but no one is paying attention.
