The Ongoing Leader: Gaining Momentum

Gaining momentum is an important step to a team. Without momentum, things stagnate. With momentum, amazing things happen.

So, how exactly does a leader build momentum for their team? Here are some methods to consider:

  1. Create constant success – the number one issue with most teams is that it has been too long since they achieved success in something. Find a worthy goal, gather the team, and make it happen. Once you achieve the goal, celebrate it
  2. Remove barriers – teams with barriers can’t get anywhere. Find the things that are preventing your team from making progress and break them down or go around them
  3. Play to team strengths – you’ll never be able to maintain momentum if you ask your team to do things that is outside their strength zone. As a team leader, it is your responsibility to determine your team’s skills and strengths and apply them properly. You may also want to identify weaknesses and make a list of things that your team should avoid to prevent losing momentum

Spend some time and consider how you can help your team develop and maintain momentum. You’ll soon realize that it isn’t as hard as you thought.

    Sometimes it can be as simple as reviewing your accomplishments as a team and reminding them how significant these are to the overall goals of the organization. Often, our teams do accomplish many things but as leaders we forget to review, remind, and celebrate. It is amazing what that process can do to continue to build momentum too!
