The Incoming Leader: Gaining Trust

Submitted by James Higginbotham on May 12, 2009 – 5:20 amNo Comment

Put yourself in their place: you have a team of people you know, with procedures you know, with a leader you know. Then, the leader has to move away. A new leader is coming in. How will they shake things up? Will they like what I can do? How much will things change?

Now, YOU are the new leader. How do you gain the team’s trust? Here are some suggestions:

  1. By listening – no one likes a leader that jumps in and gives orders. Take the time to listen to your team. Understand what each person likes and dislikes. Find out what kind of skills they have
  2. By doing – Learn how the team works by rolling up your sleeves and helping out. Be willing to do first when the team needs help
  3. By success – help your team through small successes. Create small goals that the team can achieve. It will bring the team together and help you get to know each team member

It isn’t about how well you can lead. Gaining your new team’s trust is essential. Take the time to build trust and you’ll build a successful team.
