Giving and Taking Opportunities

Submitted by James Higginbotham on January 13, 2009 – 5:17 amNo Comment

When was the last time you gave someone an opportunity they may not have had otherwise? It may be something as simple as sponsoring a child through Compassion International. It may be something more personal, such as providing a job to someone trying to rebuild their life. Or it may investing time with the youth to help prepare them before they go to college and into the workforce.

Whatever it is, opportunities are what make people who they are.
Malcolm Gladwell, in his book titled Outliers, discusses the different opportunities we all have. Most of the opportunities he focuses on are circumstance-based: the month someone was born, a specific range of years when someone was a certain age, or the number of hours someone had to learn something ahead of others (he calls this the 10,000 hour rule).

The other kind of opportunity he describes is when someone is given an opportunity and they take it. This opportunity is exactly what KIPP Academy provides to children from poor families. KIPP students are given the opportunity to increase their workload by 62% through their unique schooling program. In exchange, they are given the opportunity to build a foundation for success in life in whatever they want to do.

As leaders, it is up to us to give opportunities to those ready to take them. What kind of opportunities could you give to someone else that otherwise would never have them? Perhaps it is time to step up and lead by making these opportunities available.
