Firing Volunteers

Submitted by James Higginbotham on September 24, 2008 – 5:00 amNo Comment

Once you have determined that you need to fire a volunteer, there are several steps that need to be taken prior to firing the volunteer:

  1. Schedule a time to meet with the volunteer
  2. Include at least one other staff/elder that can assist with the discussion
  3. Prepare what is to be said and keep focused on the matter at hand, the reasons, and that you are focused on their spiritual health

Once the volunteer has been fired, expect any or all of the following situations:

  1. They decide to leave the church over the situation
  2. They may speak badly about the firing and any of the events that led to the firing
  3. They may speak badly about the leader(s) involved in the firing
  4. Other volunteers may become scared or concerned about the firing
  5. The loss of other volunteers that had close relationships with the one fired

The best thing you can do during the firing is to focus on why they are being fired and work toward the development of a healthier volunteer. The volunteer may not be open to the assistance, but focusing your prayer and words to minister to their well-being is the best thing that can be done.
