Don’t Be a Task Collector

Submitted by James Higginbotham on August 11, 2008 – 5:47 amNo Comment

Three of the four gospels talk about tax collectors – those responsible for collecting taxes for Rome, often pocketing the leftover for themselves. They were often spoken about in the same breath as sinners and looked down upon by others in their community. Matthew is the most well known of the tax collectors in the gospels, who traded in his tax collecting for ministering to others in need.

So, are you like the tax collectors of Rome, trying to find ways to create more tasks so you can have more to do? Or, are you like Matthew after he met Jesus – ministering to others in need?

Creating tasks for yourself and your team is easy – there is always more to be done. I’ve never met someone that said, “Wow! I have nothing to do – we’ve met every community need!” I have, however, met those that are physically and emotionally exhausted from battling with the ups and downs of everyday life. These are the people that need our ministry.

Leading church volunteers isn’t a hobby, like collecting stamps or Pez dispensers. This is a serious role that demands serious attention to people. So, if you are a task collector, it may be time to pray for Jesus to help make you a minister to those in need – just like he did Matthew.
