Sparking Creativity

Submitted by James Higginbotham on July 30, 2008 – 5:29 amNo Comment

While there are plenty of books that discuss how to be creative, the one pattern that I’ve seen most successful is getting people out of their natural element. This means allowing your volunteers to take a regular break, allowing them to refresh themselves.

Here are some additional steps to take when it comes to seeking creative ideas from others:

  1. Pose the problem in one sentence (or less)
  2. Give them a milestone when all suggestions must be provided, a week minimum, and be sure they have time off from their church duties. Not everyone can be creative “on demand” and on your timeline
  3. Give them at least two ways to contact you with suggestions (e.g. via phone or email) and make sure they have the contact details of how and when to reach you.

We can all forget how busy life can be, and we can be really bad about forgetting this fact when it is time for a church service. We need to let our volunteers breathe by giving them time on their own, not taking more from them.
