When is it time to dismiss a ministry leader?

Submitted by James Higginbotham on July 29, 2008 – 5:00 amNo Comment

I recently heard of a bad situation – one where volunteers were being mistreated by a leader. The leader was being very rude, disrespectful, and pointing fingers at others. Thankfully, a staff member realized the situation and talked to the leader about this character issue. During the course of the conversation, the staff member noticed that there was no remorse by the leader and opted to ask the leader to step down.

Although the leader is no longer serving, consider the damage that was caused:

  1. The leader ruined his witness and reputation with the team
  2. The leader ruined his relationship with the staff member, as harsh things were said during the discussion of the issue
  3. The team is now hurt, some of them possibly leaving the team or the church as a result

How would you deal with a leader that is exhibiting one or more character flaws, which we all have? Where would you draw the line?
