Break the Business Leader Mentality

Submitted by James Higginbotham on July 16, 2008 – 5:00 amNo Comment

I’ve seen too many business leaders try to run church ministries like they run their business. The problem with most business leaders is that they focus on the tasks and milestones in front of them while forgetting the people behind them.

While businesses can often find and train someone new given the right monetary offer, volunteers are giving their free time and energy for little or no compensation. Yes, I know, they are serving the Lord and that is reward enough. That is true. But it is also true that church leaders are called to be stewards of their volunteers. Jesus taught that leaders (aka “masters”) are to serve while they lead. All of us would do better to not only remember this principle but to practice it.

So, business leaders, listen up: doing ministry isn’t the same as building a small business or closing another sales deal. It is about people and relationships. It means you must value people more than their output. It also means that they can walk off the job at any time, without any notice.

Remember – they aren’t working for you to support their family, they are working for the Lord to support their church.
