Growing Your Ministry Through…Purpose

Submitted by James Higginbotham on August 4, 2006 – 6:52 pmNo Comment

Does your ministry have a mission or vision statement? Is it written down? Can your team tell you what it is? The first step in growing your ministry is defining what it is. Beyond that, it is really about defining what it isn’t. If you do not have a clear purpose for what your ministry is about, how do you know if what you do is important? And, how can you have a passion for what you do?

Here are the steps to defining a purpose for your ministry:

  1. Determine: Prayerfully seek the Lord on what your ministry should be – ask Him to guide you in what the ministry should look like and do
  2. Define: Determine the mission for your ministry – a mission defines what it does (and what is missing is what you don’t do)
  3. Dream: Determine the vision for your ministry – what should your church look like if your mission is accomplished?
  4. Document: Write down your mission and vision, including any other details that help define your ministry
  5. Disseminate : Spread the word about your mission and vision at your team gatherings. Make sure your team understands it and can explain it back to you or to others

In the end, remember: people don’t spend their time and money on need – they spend it on vision. Build a vision that is sellable and you will build a growing ministry.
