If Your Volunteers Posted a Blog…

Submitted by James Higginbotham on April 1, 2006 – 11:19 pmOne Comment

If your volunteers posted an entry on their blog about your ministry, what would they say?

  • Are you others-focused, or self-focused?
  • Are you making progress, or making work?
  • Are you organized, or scattered?
  • Do you listen, or do you demand?
  • Can they come to you when they are hurting, or do they hurt because they can’t come to you?

Did you score well? Congrats! Did one of those hit a nerve? Make a change! It can be hard to take a [tag]self assessment[/tag], and even harder to ask someone to rate you. But it is often better than waiting until times get rough and people are hurting to find out things could have been changed. Oh, and if you are waiting for them to say something – don’t. People will often tell you the truth if you ask, but won’t say anything if you keep quiet.

There is a lot of talk about [tag]leadership[/tag] these days – seminars, books, and blogs. Even [tag]Andy Stanley[/tag] and [tag]Jim Collins[/tag] are chiming in. My church even focuses regional meetings on leadership, where pastors and lay leaders (that somehow get a Thursday and Friday free) meet up, listen to one another, and encourage one another. The problem often isn’t lacking time to attend those conferences, but rather failing to listen to those that we lead each and every week. These are the ones that we must be ministering to, challenging, growing, and serving. So, why is it that we are willing to pay for a travel, room, and board to here what other leaders have to say, when we don’t listen to those that know us best and to whom we are stewards? Don’t get me wrong – [tag]conferences[/tag] can recharge the spirit and refuel the soul, but don’t rely on them for your feedback. Start with your own team, and do it soon – before they decide to blog about you first!
