The Astros and the 2005 World Series

Submitted by James Higginbotham on October 27, 2005 – 11:15 amNo Comment

Being a huge Astros fan, I was very excited to see the Astros make it into the World Series. I’ve been watching since Biggio’s rookie year, when I received free tickets from school. My dad and I had such a great time that I got hooked on listening each night to Milo Hamilton’s play-by-play on AM 740 in Houston. So, needless to say, this was a long day coming for me.

What I really enjoyed was the fact that Houston, in the wake of a tough start (15-30), pulled it out by playing the season game-by-game, eventually reaching the World Series. We saw great pitching, some injuries, exciting comebacks, and a few tough losses. But I think what speaks the most about this season was the playoff games that went into extra innings: NLDS game 4 that went an amazing 18 innings and again with WS game 3 going 14 innings. This showed off the lengths that the Astros went to stay in the game – using almost every player to try and secure the victory. Hats off to the players and Phil Garner for playing some great ball!

No, the Astros didn’t win the World Series. But, they didn’t go down without a fight. That’s why I’ve been a fan since they started to rebuild in the late 1980s. And now it’s paying dividends.
