I’ll be at the Godbit dinner tonight http://www.volunteercentered.com/2008/03/10/ill-be-at-the-godbit-dinner-tonight/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2008/03/10/ill-be-at-the-godbit-dinner-tonight/#comments Mon, 10 Mar 2008 12:34:54 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/2008/03/10/ill-be-at-the-godbit-dinner-tonight/ Those of you in Austin for SXSW, I’ll be attending the Godbit dinner tonight. I was able to go last year and I had a great time. Since I live in Austin I try to meet up with as many people as possible, even though I haven’t been able to make it to SXSW the last few years. If you are in town and can’t make it, let me know and maybe we can meet up separately.

Hope to see you there!

Take Time http://www.volunteercentered.com/2007/04/21/take-time/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2007/04/21/take-time/#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2007 22:19:05 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/2007/04/21/take-time/ A few weeks ago, I had a good friend and co-worker call me after dinner and asked if I would mind if he stopped by to pray with me. He knew that I was about to make some difficult decisions just like he was and he wanted to spend some time together. To be honest, my first instinct is to protect the time of my family – an overcorrection to mistakes of the past. I quickly got over that, given that I had just recently started discipling him and I love to be around and support those new in the faith. So, I gladly accepted his offer.

Needless to say, It was quite a blessing! We prayed freely, conversationally, and personally. We shared a very personal time together with the Lord. It also helped remind me about what it is like during those first few months of dedicating your life to Christ – that “first love” that is easily forgotten. Finally, it illustrated much of what I write about here – take the time to spend with others before you add more to your overburdened workload – whenever you can. That is where the real ministry is at!

Memories of 9/11 http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/09/11/memories-of-911/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/09/11/memories-of-911/#comments Mon, 11 Sep 2006 13:09:14 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/?p=130 At the 5th anniversary of 9/11, I was caught in memory lane along with so many other bloggers. I debated on whether to post my memories of the day to my blog, or if I should just move on. I’ve decided to go ahead and post them.

On the morning of 9/11, I was listening to a news radio station while driving into the office of my startup. I had just kicked off a startup in May and was busy working on finalizing the code for a demo to some potential investors. I heard a radio newsbreak about the first plane striking the tower. Once I got inside the office, I turned on our small TV (we used it to test the cable modem connection when it was installed and never removed it). As I was watching the replay of the first plane hitting the tower, they cut to a live picture as the second tower was struck. I was the first one in the office, so as the rest of the team came in, most hadn’t heard. My partner and I looked at the TV and realized that magnitude of what was happening. We all spent a little more time hugging our family in the days after. We also spent less time at work, as life held more meaning and seemed just a bit shorter. Things would never be the same, though after a while we would slowly start to forget the full impact of that day as we moved on. We also realized that our startup wouldn’t be the same (we closed up 2 weeks later).

I’m Back http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/07/17/im-back/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/07/17/im-back/#comments Tue, 18 Jul 2006 00:27:20 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/07/17/im-back/ Sorry for the long pause in posts – I’ve been really busy with work, church, and other duties. On the church front, I’ve been asked to help lead an effort at church to support the volunteer lifecycle. This will involve teaching ministry leaders how to best grow their ministry and manage their volunteer workloads. In addition, we will be implementing some new processes for guiding new volunteers into service and following-up with them in the future. Finally, I’m helping to roll out a tool that I’ve built to assist with weekly management of volunteers. All-in-all, some great stuff but it has been keeping me busier than normal. Expect some fresh posts on ministry project management as well as other topics within the next few days.

Sci-Fi Friday comes through again http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/01/07/sci-fi-friday-comes-through-again/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/01/07/sci-fi-friday-comes-through-again/#comments Sat, 07 Jan 2006 23:44:01 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/?p=42 I must say, the second half of the new season started off with a bang! Battlestar Galactica was the most intense, with both SG-1 and Atlantis delivering better episodes than I expected. I won’t give away any spoilers here, but feel free to comment if you want to chat about any of the 3 episodes (or the Firefly marathon, for that matter)

BTW, I did a search for the person behind the haunting music of Battlestar Galactica and found him: Bear McCreary. Check out some of his samples – he’s very talented!

Sci-Fi Friday is Back! http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/01/06/sci-fi-friday-is-back/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2006/01/06/sci-fi-friday-is-back/#comments Fri, 06 Jan 2006 15:33:12 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/?p=41 After a (what felt like a long) hiatus, Sci-Fri Friday is back! In celebration, my wife and I have been watching the Battlestar Galactica Season 2.0 DVDs to remind ourselves of the July-Sept episode run. If you haven’t been keeping up with the newest BSG, you are missing out! While I believe that SG-1 has jumped the shark, its still fun to watch as well. So, grab some food and sit down for some new episodes!

My wife and daughter have both been battling with Bronchitis, so I’ve been taking on more of the holiday prep while tending to their needs. I hope to utilize a portion of my vacation time to catch up on a variety of topics. Stay tuned!

Convergence http://www.volunteercentered.com/2005/10/06/convergence/ http://www.volunteercentered.com/2005/10/06/convergence/#comments Thu, 06 Oct 2005 18:23:56 +0000 James Higginbotham http://www.volunteercentered.com/?p=18 My pastor has started a new series at church called “Convergence”. It is the study of what happens when one walks closely with God through an exploration of the book of Mark for the next year or more. This has been a great study so far, and has me thinking of something that God has stirring in my life. What happens when there is “Convergence” between God, His Will, and our lives? There is more than just walking with God, there is walking the road for God. This is where things are truly exciting, as you are not just depending upon God for eternal salvation, guidance, and protection. You are depending on Him to guide you each and every day, realizing what He wants for you to do and walking that path He has in store for you. Over the next few weeks, I hope to provide some more insight into what my path seems to be.
