When Things Get Out of Control

I recently wrapped a pretty big project that has occupied a lot of my time recently. This one was a pleasure to work on, but at times I struggled with ensuring that everything was coming together at the right time, by the right people, and in the right order. It was at these times when I struggled the most with stress and anxiety. Here is what I learned:

  1. Humans are wired with fight or flight responses that often kick in during times of high stress. We have a choice that is even bigger: run away from God or run toward God
  2. All of those positive quotes, comments, and quips that I often read on Twitter seem great at the time but they didn’t help in the midst of chaos. God’s Word always helps
  3. Be sure to understand how each person on your team works. This means spending time with them outside of the work effort to understand their personal lives. Some have big things going on that you may not realize, which may impact their contributions to the project
  4. Don’t make excuses if you don’t hit your mark. Know that you did your best, prioritize what you can, and let go of the rest
  5. Never sacrifice your time with family. In fact, sometimes the best cure is to increase your time. During this high stress time, my daughter reached a point where she was ready to do morning devotionals. All I can say is that God can work through you as you help a 7 year old understand God’s Word!
