Does Your Church Staff Volunteer?

Submitted by James Higginbotham on March 29, 2010 – 4:13 amNo Comment

Rindy Walton asks a great question of all staff: do you volunteer as you expect those in your church to volunteer? Where is the line for church staff to give extra time to their local church?

Rindy first sets the stage by reminding church staff what they are asking volunteers to do:

Volunteers serve above and beyond their regular jobs, in their ’spare time’ and without an expectation of compensation. But, what if you ‘work’ in a church? Where is the line between ‘working’ and ‘volunteering’? Sure, you put in extra ‘unpaid’ hours…but don’t our volunteers do that with their jobs too? Yes, it takes a lot of energy, time and emotional commitment and stress working in a church…does that mean we can’t give our ’spare time’ as we expect others to?

Next, she challenges church staff with this:

Bottom line is, are we modeling volunteering to those we’re trying to get to volunteer? Or, do we simply think, “I give so much time to the church, it ‘counts as’ volunteering? Where does ‘job’ end and ‘volunteer’ begin? If we expect people to give their time, we had better be sure we know when and how we’re giving ours!

I would encourage you to visit her website and give your opinion, as I think this is an important topic for church staff. Why? Because your volunteers are already asking the question. Do you have the answer? Is your answer a series of photo ops or something built upon a heart to serve?
