The Economy and the Church: Too Much Stuff

Submitted by James Higginbotham on January 18, 2010 – 4:53 amNo Comment

As a church, we’ve had an abundance of giving and growth. Many churches have had more giving than ever. Some churches have grown from a few hundred to many thousands of members. We have more Bible studies, more small groups, and more projects.

Until recently. With the economic downturn, many churches are closing their doors due to lack of money. Some are downsizing their facilities, abandoning their multi-million dollar, custom built buildings for a modest location in a strip center.

Whatever the case for your church, I think it is a great time to get back to God’s purpose: harvesting the fields.

It is time to start equipping the local church body to harvest those that need to know their is more to life than work.

It is time to start equipping the local church body to harvest those that are ready to produce fruit within the church.

It is time to start equipping the local church body to harvest outside their community through internal and external missions.

To be able to do this, we must get ourselves right again:

It is time to get ourselves right by focusing on ministering and discipling people rather than making more work for ourselves.

It is time to get ourselves right by focusing on saving and investing rather than spending and claiming it is “for God’s glory”.

It is time to get ourselves right by focusing on equipping our people to minister to others suffering through loss and disaster.

Are you ready to do this? Is your church ready to do this?

It is time to start truly leading. This means leading when things are tough, rather than in abundance.

Are you really ready to do this?

Are you scared?

Is it beyond what you can do by yourself?

Great! This is where God wants you to be. Let’s get started!
