A Story of 5 Strangers

Submitted by James Higginbotham on July 15, 2009 – 4:02 pmNo Comment

My wife recently mentioned that a team at a nearby church was trying to raise money for 5 strangers. These strangers don’t attend our church. They don’t know anyone there. It just happens that someone at our church knows about them.

The problem is that the person that knows them can’t seem to rally those around them to contribute to their cause. When I asked what their story was, there wasn’t one.

It isn’t that you need a story to do good things for people. We can all do good things anonymously and without reason.  The problem is that there is so much need around us that we need to hear stories to be personally connected. Once personally connected, we are more willing to give ourselves to their cause.

Does your church have a cause? What is its story? What is it that is connecting your attendees to your church? If you don’t have one, you better get one. Otherwise, they’ll leave when they hear a better story than the one you aren’t telling.
