Technology Doesn’t Lead, It Enables

Submitted by James Higginbotham on October 21, 2008 – 5:36 amOne Comment

I have noticed the recent trend of using technology to reduce the loss of church membership. Somehow, we think that if we have just the right database of information about our church membership, we’ll keep them from leaving “through the back door” (I dispise this phrase). In some amazing way, a report will tell us what we need to do to prevent the church from losing people.

Has anyone stopped to think that the reason they are leaving that church is because it isn’t relevant to their needs anymore? It isn’t about what data we’ve captured about them. It isn’t about whether we offer enough programs that can interest their unique hobbies and situations.

Technology is a good thing. It can enable ministry leaders to schedule their volunteers and keep things running smooth. It can even help organizations track donations and simplify end-of-year reports.

You want to prevent losing church members? Lead them! Technology doesn’t lead, it enables. Lead them on a journey that changes their life in amazing ways. Lead them to a desire to lead others. Don’t lead them to simply fill up their family calendar with lots of things that keep them busy.

We have enough to do every day as it is. Lead your church to help one another and the community during the difficult times. Help them lead others outside the community during the less difficult times. Strive to lead the church into action that makes a change in one another’s lives.

Lead while using technology. Don’t lead by technology only.
