It’s about the people

There have been some interesting discussions of late surrounding hiring outside the walls of the church, rather than from within. The discussions started from Terry Storch’s post regarding Fellowship Church’s decision to seek positions from outside the church membership. This prompted Bob Nahrstadt to post a follow-up comment regarding Starbucks and their diverse set of executives.

I think it is a very interesting discussion, and based on what I’ve read from both of them, it boils down to this: it isn’t about the vision, it is about executing your vision. This means finding the right people with the right mix of skills and background to make your church effective. Because, in the end, that is the purpose of our lives – to execute our God-given vision to effectively reach and win lost souls. And that, in a nutshell, is an Agile Ministry.

This is a tough one. I’d say it’s a combination of the two. Hire and promote from within, but as needed and for strategic positions that insiders aren’t good fits, hire without. Don’t fill a position with an insider, just to stay within. Thats a mistake for everyone.
